A postcard from Cappadocia

Hey District Loom Family,

We arrived in Cappadocia after dark and were instantly greeted by the magical glow of stone caves scattered across the hillside in Uchisar. When dawn broke, we woke up to the prettiest pink sky I’ve ever seen—hundreds of hot air balloonss took off all at once, painting the sky in a way that left us completely breathless.

As we stood on the terrace of our cozy cave hotel, sipping on steaming cups of traditional Turkish tea, we couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of wonder at the panoramic views. The landscape here is like nothing we had ever experienced; it's a surreal blend of geological marvels and historical richness.

We spent the morning climbing up to Uchisar Castle and then hiked 5 miles through the unique rock formations of Pigeon Valley to Gerome, where we treated ourselves to a delicious, traditional Turkish lunch. No trip to Cappadocia would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights like manti (Turkish dumplings) and testi kebab, a delicious meat and vegetable stew cooked in a clay pot. This experience not only enriched our taste buds but also gave us a deeper appreciation for the hospitality and culture of the region.

After lunch, our adventure continued as we made our way to the Göreme Open-Air Museum. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a treasure trove of historical significance, featuring rock-cut churches adorned with stunning frescoes dating back to the 10th century. As we wandered through the ancient cave dwellings, we marveled at the artistry that has withstood the test of time, providing us a glimpse into the lives and spirituality of early Christian communities.

Whirling Dervishes Ceremony: A Spiritual Journey

One of the most captivating experiences in Cappadocia is witnessing the Whirling Dervishes ceremony, known as the Sema. This ancient ritual, rooted in Sufi mysticism, is both a spiritual and cultural treasure of Turkey. Attending a ceremony here can be an uplifting experience, offering a deep connection to the rich traditions of the region.

The Essence of the Ceremony

The Whirling Dervishes, also known as Mevlevi, practice a form of meditation through dance, known as sema. This dance symbolizes a mystical journey to spiritual perfection, where the dervishes perform a graceful spinning motion that represents the orbit of celestial bodies as well as the unity of the universe. Adorned in stunning white skirts and tall hats, the dervishes create a mesmerizing sight as they spin to the enchanting sounds of traditional Sufi music.

Where to Experience It

In Cappadocia, you can find several venues that host authentic Whirling Dervishes ceremonies. The most famous is the Saruhan Caravanserai in Avanos, which dates back to the 13th century, providing a beautiful historical backdrop to the performances.

Once our feet were back on solid ground, we set off to explore the diverse landscapes that make Cappadocia truly extraordinary. The region is famous for its fairy chimneys—tall, thin spires of rock that have been shaped by centuries of erosion.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we made our way to a viewpoint for the iconic sunset over the fairy chimneys -The perfect end to a dreamy day.

But the next day? Complete surprise!

We met with one of our suppliers and toured their facility, learning all about the intricate process of vintage rug repairs, stretching, and washing. A behind-the-scenes look at what makes these pieces so special. We, of course, had our fair share of Turkish tea and coffee and enjoyed authentic meals with their family—an unforgettable experience that deepened our appreciation for the artistry of these textiles.

During our visit, we were captivated by the stories woven into each rug, tales of craftsmanship passed down through generations.

The vibrant colors and intricate patterns told a history not just of the region but of a people enduring through time. It was a reminder that travel isn’t just about the destinations, but the connections we make along the way.

Each brushstroke tells a story, and the vibrant colors—though faded by time—still convey the passion and devotion of the artists who created them.

One of the most remarkable sites within the museum is the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), renowned for its well-preserved frescoes that are a striking testament to Byzantine artistry. The dim lighting of the church has played a pivotal role in preserving its artwork, allowing visitors to marvel at the depth and detail of scenes from the New Testament. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes—exploring this fascinating site involves quite a bit of climbing and walking through narrow passages!

Another highlight of your visit should be the Apple Church (Elmali Kilise), named for its historical association with the apple orchards that once flourished.

To be honest, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. There are more plans than time, and I’m hoping to meet all of our business partners while also seeing every sight this city has to offer.
