At least all front legs should fit comfortably on the rug—bigger is better in this case.
Layering rugs can create a more dynamic set of colors and textures.
Dining Room
The table edge should be around two feet from the edge of the rug, to ensure that chair legs don’t get caught when pulled out.
Bedroom
Larger rugs should extend at least a foot on either side of the bed.
Smaller rugs or runners can be placed on either side of the bed.
Medium rugs can be placed at the foot of the bed with two legs sitting on the rug.
Hallway & Entryway
A runner for a long hallway should extend as far as possible—you can also combine two shorter rugs to create this illusion.
Smaller runners can be in front of a console or hall table to be grounded in the space.
Kitchen
The runner should have a border of around 2 inches of floor space between cabinet.
